CONCEPT NOTE OF THE CONFERENCE
For people trained in the modern sciences, Vedic knowledge offers many concepts that may at times appear incomprehensible, or even contradictory. Partly in response, this conference aims to examine cosmological descriptions offered in time-honored Purāṇic and Jyotiṣā texts (Siddhāntas) identified with the Vedic tradition, as more than a collection of seemingly esoteric metaphysical perspectives. In fact, traditional texts such as these encompass a rational system of thought also grounded in observational data that can offer significant contributions to contemporary scientific discussions. For example, the legacy of Vedic mathematics offers overlap between traditional systems of Vedic thought and contemporary analyses of the natural world. The organizers thus propose that the tentative conclusions facilitated by modern science can be augmented by age-old perspectives drawn from both the Purāṇas and Siddhāntas.
This conference also aims to be the first in a series of seminars fostering a continuous dialogue that proactively engages Vedic considerations of natural philosophy while avoiding indulgence in either excessive religious dogma or scientific rationalism. Such discourse aims to encourage an appreciation of how the cosmological descriptions found in the Purāṇic and Jyotiṣā traditions can help enhance a grander sense of reality underlying ordinary conditional experience.
ABOUT ISKCON
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), otherwise known as the Hare Krishna movement, belongs to the Gaudiya-Vaishnava sampradāya, a monotheistic tradition within the Vedic or Hindu culture. Philosophically it is based on the Sanskrit texts Bhagavad-gītā and the Bhagavat Purana, or Srimad Bhagavatam. ISKCON’s founder, Srila Prabhupada, has drawn appreciation from scholars and religious leaders alike for his remarkable achievement in presenting India’s Vaishnava spiritual culture in a relevant manner to contemporary Western and worldwide audiences. Many leading academics have highlighted ISKCON’s authenticity. Diana Eck, Professor of Comparative Religion and Indian Studies at Harvard University, describes the movement as "a tradition that commands a respected place in the religious life of humankind." In the 1980s Dr. A. L. Basham, one of the world’s authorities on Indian history and culture, wrote of ISKCON, "It arose out of next to nothing in less than twenty years and has become known all over the West. This, I feel, is a sign of the times and an important fact in the history of the Western world."
As a practical application of the path of devotional yoga ISKCON members have also opened hospitals, schools, colleges, eco-villages, free food distribution projects, and other institutions. Besides the practice of bhakti-yoga in their homes and worship in temples, they also promote bhakti-yoga, or Krishna Consciousness, through festivals, the performing arts, yoga seminars, public chanting, and the distribution of the society’s literature. Although less than fifty years on the global stage, ISKCON has expanded widely since its founding by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda in New York City in 1966 and currently includes five hundred major centers, temples, and rural communities, nearly one hundred affiliated vegetarian restaurants, a wide variety of community projects, and millions of congregational members worldwide.
ACADEMIC PARTNERS
The Bhaktivedanta Institute for Higher Studies (BIHS) is a center for the research and dissemination of a non-mechanistic scientific view of reality. The main purpose of the Institute is to explore the implications of Bhagavat Vedanta philosophy as it bears upon human culture, and to present its findings in courses, lectures, conferences, monographs, digital media, and books. Our work contributes a non-mechanistic view of matter and consciousness to scientific discourse with a goal of exploring consciousness as an irreducible aspect of reality.
The Bhaktivedanta Institute (BI) was formed in 1976 to build intellectual bridges and create joint research paths between the empirical knowledge of modern scholasticism and the metaphysical, cosmological, and cultural descriptions of India’s Bhagavata Vedanta tradition. Over the last four decades, our work has produced numerous significant publications, research partnerships, and conference proceedings. Past conferences sponsored by the Bhaktivedanta Institute have brought together scientists and philosophers, including a number of Nobel Laureates, to explore areas of mutual interest.
We disseminate research outcomes through articles, monographs, and books and hold open discussion and presentation forums through an ongoing series of courses, lectures, and conferences. We welcome networking with researchers from all disciplines and philosophical persuasions.
The Bhaktivedanta Research Centre is a premium research institute headquartered in Kolkata with branches across various cities in India such as Mumbai, Pune, Jagannath Puri, and Vrindavan. It’s noble aim is to be a leading research center and an academic institution dedicated to preserving, researching, and disseminating the rich history, philosophy, and cultural heritage of India in general and Bengal in particular as well as to create awareness and foster cooperation on these studies internationally.
Our mission is to facilitate an inclusive academic environment for national and international scholars irrespective of their socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. We want to offer them accredited academic programs including Ph.D., MA, Diploma, and Certificate courses, and excel in qualitative research in the diverse fields of aesthetics, culture, history, comparative religion, philosophy, and sociology of Indic studies.
The Academy of Research for Cultivation of Indian Sciences (ARCIS) is a vibrant institute, under ARCIS knowledge foundation Kolkata, dedicated to intensive study & research on the Indian Sciences, Indian wisdom & Indian heritage. The centre will primarily focus on the interfacing of the ancient Indian wisdom with natural sciences and mathematical sciences. The centre will also play a pivotal role in translation and communication of scientific literature. The scientific literature found in the Sanskrit texts and manuscripts and the scientific works in the Indian vernaculars will be translated into English for wider outreach. Additionally, the center will develop a platform to showcase the life and works of the Indian scientists and mathematicians who have made a significant contribution in their respective fields.
ARCIS will emerge as a center of excellence that will, on one hand, nurture the scientific heritage of India and, on the other hand, will cultivate the Ancient Indian wisdom in its pristine form.
